It’s not music booming out of a superpowered Bluetooth speaker. Seven minutes later, he’s led inside and into a “VIP” room with photos and T-shirts and basketballs on a table in the corner orange Post-its designate which ones he should sign.

Before Golden is through the door, a Gators fan stops him for a one-on-one chat. “What up, big dog? Want to go play some golf?” he says to a familiar face in the welcome party. The SUV pulls up to the Hyatt Regency a few minutes after 7 p.m., and Golden immediately hops out and into small talk. There’s no slowing down on Tuesday night in late June. A couple of moderately legible lines down, right after the bit about Florida welcoming his family with open arms: Everything happened incredibly fast. He arrived at the jet in Gainesville about an hour and a half earlier, a club sub from Jersey Mike’s in hand, primed to tug at some blue-and-orange heartstrings, to continue selling himself and his vision to curious buyers. Florida’s new men’s basketball coach got this job at age 36, after merely three years running a mid-major program, in part due to being a darling of the analytics crowd. “I’m not buying it,” Golden deadpans, like someone who’ll need more data before jumping to that sort of conclusion, which figures. Along Le Jeune Road, about five minutes before the small traveling party’s scheduled arrival time for yet another appearance on the summer speaking and selfie-taking circuit, a large red sign catches Golden’s eye.
